As Casey walked to the station, her mobile rang. She reefed it out of her bag. “Casey Rowan.

Gross and Beckmann’s paintings were part of a traveling exhibition that began in Munich towards the end of the war. It was called The Intartete Kunst. The artists were branded enemies of the state and a threat to German culture, their art labeled degenerate. Beckman fled to Amsterdam on the opening day of the exhibit.” A shiver ran up Casey’s spine as he continued. “The only thing I can say about the rest, is that they are genuine artworks probably removed from wealthy Jewish families by the Nazis.

Any idea what happened to them after that?

They may have been destroyed,” he said.

Casey drew a deep breath. With the discovery of Karl’s photo, she was confident she was getting somewhere. “That would be great.

There’s a coffee shop near the Gallery. Just pop in sometime around two.

I will.”

Casey headed into the Tube and dialed Rod, the call went straight to voicemail.
